The Adelaide Gaol built in 1840, was based on the latest European gaol designs and were said to be radical for the time. In its147 years of operation approximately 300,000 prisoners passed through the Gaol and 45 people were executed, their bodies are buried within the grounds. On 4 February 1988 the Gaol was officially decommissioned.

A cell block
Grave site within the prison grounds of the only woman hanged in South Australia, Elizabeth Woolcock, 26 years old in 1873. After years of abuse in which she tried to commit suicide on several occasions she could finally put up with it no more and poisoned her husband, for which she paid dearly.
I thought it was touching that visitors had placed flowers.
1800’s graffiti by a seafaring man maybe?
1980’s graffiti

A wonderful set of images of what would have been a house of horrors. The cell block could be made into motel units for brave visitors to spend a night
